Spook Yourself Silly
Its October and this month our social event falls on the spookiest night of the year - Halloween. It is a time when natural laws are suspended and ghosts and demons roam the world.
The night will start at The Pied Bull on Northgate Street, Chester from 6.15pm for drinks and some hot nibbles. The Pied Bull is one of the oldest pubs in Chester being built in 1155 and retaining many of its original features and is meant to be home to two ghosts.
At 8.10pm we will leave The Pied Bull to join our ghost walker at a devilish location. The Ghost Walk will last for 90 minutes and will take us on a spine-chilling night time journey through Chester's errie and forgotten parts. With over 2,000 years of history it is not suprising that there have been well documented ghosts, hauntings, spooks and poltergeists in the streets and alleyways. If you are still with us at the end of the night you will be dropped back at a chilling location at 10.00pm.
The price for this event is £2.50 for members and £5 for non-members.
Tickets are strictly limited so print off this form and return the booking form with a cheque made payable to the 'Cheshire and North Wales Junior Lawyers Division'. If you need any further information please contact Caroline at caroline@cnwjld.org.uk

Anglo Dutch Exchange
Provisional Programme of Events
Tuesday
Amsterdam (Civil Law)
Morning: Travel and arrival to the Netherlands at your own expense. The first day of the Exchange will be spent in the capital of The Netherlands: Amsterdam. Those English guests flying to the Netherlands will arrive at Schiphol Airport, and will be accompanied by the Dutch Committee to leading independent law firm Kennedy Van der Laan. The firm is one of the top 10 independent law firms in Holland, and represents innovative business clients ranging in size from national and international, to budding entrepreneurs, as well as local and national government.
Lunch: After a warm welcome at Kennedy Van der Laan, the firm has invited delegates for lunch and lectures in “het Ketelhuis”, the only Dutch cinema that is especially meant for Dutch movies. The beautiful building (5 minutes from Kennedy Van der Laan’s offices) designed by Ramin Visch (www.raminvisch.nl) will be a good place to listen.
Afternoon: Lecture by Professor J.H. Nieuwenhuis, Professor in Dutch civil law and Dutch civil procedural law at University of Leiden (www.leiden.edu). He will specifically discuss recent decisions of the Dutch Courts on the concept of claims for wrongful life/birth.
Lecture by Ferdinand Mason, managing partner at Boekel de Neree, a leading Dutch independent law firm, and Netherlands co-publishers on In-House Lawyer Magazine on cross-border mergers and acquisitions.
Evening: What is a better way to explore the city of Amsterdam than by boat? The group will board at “het Ketelhuis” for a tour on the canals by boat. The final stop will be Central Station, where luggage will be already waiting for delegates, and where delegates will meet their hosts for the Exchange. Delegates will stay for the remainder of the Exchange with a Dutch colleague in Amsterdam, Rotterdam or The Hague in their house or flat. The evening is free for delegates to get to know their hosts.
Wednesday
The Hague (Criminal Law)
Morning: The second day of the Exchange will see a visit to the “legal capital of The Netherlands”. Visit to the International Criminal Court. This is the home of trials by the UN-mandated judicial authority of individuals for the most horrifying crimes, including war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide. Special security arrangements apply. (www.icc-cpi.int )
Afternoon: In the afternoon, we will be welcomed at the Dutch Supreme Court by Professor G.J.M. Corstens, a Justice and President-elect of the Supreme Court, and an expert on European Criminal Law. He will explain the position of the Supreme Court and the procedures of the final Court of Appeal in the Netherlands.
Dr. J.M. Sjöcrona, one of the founders of criminal law firm Sjöcrona Van Stigt, will also lecture delegates. He specialises in fraud cases (financial and economic criminal law), international criminal law and Supreme Court litigation. (www.svsadvocates.com )
Evening: Bird & Bird will welcome delegates after this interesting day for drinks and a short introductory talk on customs duties. In the evening delegates will relax at the beach with other Dutch lawyers.
Thursday
Rotterdam (International trade)
Morning Coffee at City Hall, where the Mayor of Rotterdam. Mr. I.W. Opstelten, will welcome the delegates, alongside the Dean of the Rotterdam Bar Association (Mr. W.H. Claassen). After attending the welcome at City Hall delegates will walk to the “Schielandhuis” for a visit and a tour in this Historical Museum of Rotterdam.
Lunch Visit to Port of Rotterdam. An opportunity to see how a terminal in one of the largest ports in Europe works. A bus will transport delegates to ECT (Europe Container Terminals), the largest container terminal in Europe, which handles most of the containers passing though the port of Rotterdam. There will be a lecture about the liability of stevedores given by Mr P. Drop, an in-house lawyer at ECT. Plus a visit to the impressive harbour - what better way to see the docks, warehouses and handling areas?
Afternoon: Visit to a corporate Dutch law firm, NautaDutilh, in Rotterdam. After the lecture the bus will take delegates back to the city centre where they will be welcomed at NautaDutilh. Mr. G.J. Meijer (a partner at NautaDutilh) and Mrs. K. Lalor (an Australian barrister working at NautaDutilh) will give a lecture about international arbitration. Afterwards NautaDutilh has invited delegates for a buffet and drinks at the firm. (www.nautadutilh.com ). In the evening delegates will get the opportunity to meet other members of the Rotterdam (Young) Bar Association in a more informal setting.
Friday
Free Day
The last day in The Netherlands is meant for delegates to explore the country on their own. Will it be the Anne Frank house, the Keukenhof, the beach or one of the beautiful museums in Rotterdam? A list of suggestions will be provided for each host city for delegates to spend their day!
Evening: The end of the week is going to be festive: there will be drinks at the Dam with other Dutch lawyers, followed by an informal dinner at the Nieuwmarkt, one of the oldest squares in Amsterdam. Afterwards, there will be plenty of opportunities to say goodbye to the Netherlands in style: exploring the night life in Amsterdam with the Dutch hosts.
